Lake Odessa, Michigan (Sunday June 22nd, 2014): The yearly tradition at the fast 3/8ths (0.375) mile high banked dirt oval of I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Michigan is that on one Sunday evening in June, the fans are treated by some of the best drivers in the country as part of the UMP DIRTcar Summernationals Hell Tour. The date for 2014 took place this past Sunday. The high-powered UMP DIRTcar Late Models went head to head for $5000 to win. The show also featured the Summit Racing Equipment UMP DIRTcar Modifieds nationals running for a $1000 to win prize. The UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks and UMP DIRTcar Pro Modifieds were on hand as well for thrilling race program.
The UMP DIRTcar Pro Modifieds were led out first for their 20-lap main event. Chad Mauer and Don Hintz took the green flag as the front row. However it would be A.J. Ward taking the advantage early on, but about mid-way through the race Hintz was able to battle back and pass Ward for the lead. Hintz would not look back as he made the trip to victory lane as the winner. Austin Wonch finished Second. Brenton DeYoung, John Taylor, and Ward were the rest of the top five. Kenny Playter, Ward, and Hintz won the heat races.
The Defending UMP DIRTcar Stock Car national champion Josh Frye took the checkered flag in the main event for the UMP DIRTcar Street Stock Feature event after jumping out front early and holding his place throughout a caution heavy race. Chuck Smith was the runner up. 18-year old Carlind Forsythe, Nick Stormzand, and Ron Harper rounded out the top five. The heat races were won by Sadie Klein, Harper, and Stormzand.
The Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals held their $1000 to win 25-lap feature. Joe Rokos and Chad Bauer sat on the front row as the green flag was displayed. Bauer took the offensive early, but he would not be able to stop the hard charging 2011 track champion Jacob Poel who worked his way from third to the lead by lap 5. Despite what the rest of the field tried to do, there was no stopping Poel from getting the big win.
Defending track champion Travis Stemler finished second. Collin Thirlby, Two time & Defending UMP DIRTcar Michigan state champion David Mielke, and Tim Stemler finished off the top five. Poel, Bauer, and Rokos scored heat wins. The B-Main was won by Nick Kurtz. Poel, Mielke, and Rokos were the fast qualifiers.
Finally, the 40-lap feature event for the Summernationals Hell Tour UMP DIRTcar Late Models were led by 2012 UMP DIRTcar National Champion Brian Shirley and Shannon Babb down to chief starter Brett Farmer’s Green Flag. Shirley wasted no time and shot off with the lead. He and Babb would stay in close contention as they both worked through heavy lap traffic, and despite anything Babb tried to do, Shirley maintained course at the helm and went all from green to checker to earn the big win.
Babb had to settle for second. 2011 UMP DIRTcar National Champion Ryan Unzicker, the defending UMP DIRTcar National Champion Brandon Sheppard, and Dona Marcoullier completed the top five. Curtis Roberts, Ryan Vanderveen, 2012 UMP DIRTcar Michigan State Champion Brandon Thirlby, Jeep Van Wormer, and the defending UMP DIRTcar Michigan State Champion Eric Spangler capped off the top ten.
